Vincent was born in Zundert. It was here that the young Vincent was shaped by his Protestant family and the culture of Brabant. It was here that his love of nature, which would continue to inspire him throughout his life, first took root.

Vincent experienced a turbulent period in Etten-Leur that marked the start of his career as a painter. He embraced life and art with total dedication and took his first steps as a professional artist.

Vincent’s life and work in Nuenen
His stay in Nuenen was one of the most significant and productive periods of his life. Between December 1883 and November 1885, he produced a quarter of his entire body of work, including ‘The Potato Eaters’.
Vincent’s journey through Brabant
Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands. This is where his unique character and exceptional talent originated. It was in Brabant that he developed his love of nature and authentic people, themes that recur throughout his entire body of work. The Van Gogh sites offer tailor-made educational activities for schools and specific target groups. Furthermore, the Van Gogh Sites Foundation has been investing for a number of years, in collaboration with Erfgoed Brabant, in the development of a comprehensive educational programme for primary schools in Brabant. Vincent van Gogh’s world extends far beyond Brabant alone. Although his roots lie in North Brabant, places connected to his life, work and legacy can be found throughout the Netherlands and far beyond.
In Brabant, you can discover the landscape that inspired Vincent: the countryside, the villages, the watermills and the places where he developed his artistry. Vincent was particularly fascinated by the Brabant watermills around Nuenen, which he depicted several times in his work. Today, many of these special locations can still be visited via walking and cycling routes.
