Van Gogh in Breda
1822: The first Van Gogh in Brabant
The Brabant story of the artist Vincent van Gogh begins in Breda. His grandfather, Vincent Ferdinand Jacob van Gogh (1789–1874), originally from The Hague, served as a minister at the Grote Kerk in Breda from 1822 until his retirement in 1853. He and his wife had nine children, including Theodorus (the painter Vincent’s father), who later became a minister. He served as a minister in Zundert, Helvoirt, Etten-Leur and Nuenen.
The 33-kilometre Van Gogh cycle route takes you past the Van Gogh highlights in and around Breda. Breda has three Van Gogh monuments: the Grote Kerk on the Markt, Huize Mertersem and the cemetery on Haagweg in the Princenhage district.

At Het Gele Huis in Princenhage, there is a wealth of knowledge about locations in Princenhage and Breda that played a role in the life of the Van Gogh family. These include the cemetery where Vincent van Gogh’s grandparents are buried, Uncle Cent’s house and the tree said to have been planted by Vincent and his brother Theo. This tree stands at Esserstraat 77, near Huize Mertersem. Every second Saturday of the month, Het Gele Huis organises a walk through Princenhage that takes in these locations. You can register via the Het Gele Huis website.
