Van Gogh in Tilburg
Where he learnt to draw
In 1866, at the age of 13, Vincent van Gogh moved from Zundert to Tilburg to study at the brand-new Rijks Hogere Burger School. It was the only HBS in North Brabant. Vincent moved into a boarding house on Haringseind – now known as Annaplein – at the start of Korvelseweg.

Discover Van Gogh’s Tilburg. When Van Gogh arrived in the city at the age of 13, Tilburg had a population of around 18,500. The Tilburg–Breda railway line and the station were just three years old, and the most common occupations were weaver and factory worker. Just as it was back then, the stream-lined landscape of the Leij and the Voorste Stroom lies in the immediate vicinity of Tilburg, with its small fields and characteristic pollarded willows. Take a walk out of the city and into the countryside to discover the charming Piushaven, the De Nieuwe Herdgang observation tower and the Moerenburg-Koningshoeven Landscape Park.

The New Vincent
In 2013, Vincents Tekenlokaal took the initiative to develop a talent programme specifically for young people aged between 10 and 14, as there was little on offer for them in the field of drawing. The programme, which originated in Tilburg, has since been rolled out to other Van Gogh sites in Brabant: the Vincent van Gogh House in Zundert and the Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen. Etten-Leur may also join the programme in 2024.
Participants follow an intensive programme comprising drawing lessons, masterclasses and excursions. The aim of the programme is to experiment with all kinds of materials and techniques alongside like-minded peers.
