Van Gogh Brabant celebrates Vincent’s birthday with a new Atlas
Today, the first copies of the Atlas van Gogh in Brabant were presented to Janne Heling on behalf of the Van Gogh family, Emilie Gordenker (Van Gogh Museum) and Provincial Executive Member Stijn Smeulders. This took place in Zundert, at the spot where the painter was born 170 years ago. The Atlas describes the 46 Van Gogh Monuments: significant sites from the period of Vincent’s youth and his development as an artist. The Van Gogh Monuments also serve as the inspiration for a series of digital art objects through which the Van Gogh Sites Foundation is exploring new ways of preserving this heritage and promoting the significance of Vincent van Gogh to new audiences.
Mapping Vincent’s life journey
The Atlas of Van Gogh in Brabant takes readers on a journey through Vincent van Gogh’s time in Brabant, visiting 46 places that were significant to his life and work in Brabant in the early19th century. The Atlas combines data, interesting facts and background information on the painter’s life, his sources of inspiration and his relationships with family and friends. The publication is the result of recent research by Van Gogh experts Ron Dirven (Curator at Van Gogh Brabant) and Helewise Berger (Curator at Het Noordbrabants Museum) in collaboration with Teio Meedendorp (Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam). The book is published by WBooks and is available from today in bookshops across the Netherlands.

Van Gogh Brabant also presented a new initiative today: Fine NFTs, a concept by Emily Cheung, CEO of Appreciator.io. The initiative arose from a Sino-European cultural programme aimed at fostering understanding and exchange. The Fine NFT reaches a young Asian audience for whom European cultural heritage would normally fall outside their sphere of interest. Appreciator.io (Hong Kong) developed ‘Fine NFTs Van Gogh Monuments’ in collaboration with Tomas Concept + Creation and the Van Gogh Sites Foundation (the organisation behind Van Gogh Brabant). For a selection of Van Gogh Monuments, they have created unique digital content based on a tree leaf from the location. The leaf symbolises Vincent’s birthplace and is a sign of his short life as an artist and the influences of nature that would remain with him throughout his career. Unlike standard NFTs, these artworks have also been 3D-printed.

Art and landscape
Later today, the cultural networking event Salon Van Gogh will take place at the Oud-Herlaer Estate. Together with the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and Van Gogh National Park, the Van Gogh Sites Foundation is using this event to draw attention to the fruitful relationship between art and landscape. The Brabant landscape was a lifelong source of inspiration and reflection for Vincent van Gogh, and the partners in Salon Van Gogh wish to support this aspect.

Van Gogh Across the Country
In 2023, Marketing Drenthe, VisitBrabant, Van Gogh Brabant, Van Gogh Drenthe and NBTC will be focusing on Vincent van Gogh. As part of this, the cultural offerings of these provinces will be linked to the landscape that so inspired Van Gogh in a year-round programme. Today, the Van Gogh Year kicked off in Drenthe with cycle routes and a mural. In Brabant, the completely refurbished Van Gogh Village Museum (formerly Vincentre) in Nuenen will open its doors on 20 April, featuring the new Vincent’s Light Lab, which has been realised in collaboration with ASML. The grand opening will take place on 16 May.
