Nuenen: In Vincent’s day, the De Groot family’s farmhouse stood in Nuenen, next to De Roosdonck mill. He visited them frequently and painted them – their portraits, hands and the interior of their cottage. That cottage and the family served as models for countless studies of landscapes, farmers’ faces and hands. In April and May 1885, he finally painted what he himself regarded as his first fully-fledged work: *The Potato Eaters*. It depicts the De Groot family at mealtime. Vincent sent it to his brother Theo on 6 May. He also made a lithograph of it, with the aim of distributing it as a proof of his skill.
