The Noordbrabants Museum, ’s-Hertogenbosch: The thatched and straw-roofed farmhouses in Nuenen and the surrounding area reminded Van Gogh of the Brabant of his youth. He had no appreciation for modern tiled roofs. He compared the moss-covered huts to the birds’ nests he collected and called them ‘human nests’. He preferred to paint them at dawn or in the evening light. Even later in France, far from his native region, Vincent painted houses with thatched roofs once more, as a ‘Memoir of Brabant’. They were clearly etched in his memory.
