Nuenen: From May 1884, Vincent rented a studio from the Catholic sexton Johannes Schafrat. After his father’s death, Vincent also moved in there. Eventually, it became difficult to find models. The parish priest forbade his parishioners from posing. He would even pay them not to do so. That is one of the reasons why Vincent left Nuenen at the end of November and set off for Antwerp. Moreover, he hoped to learn a little more at the academy there and longed for the art world he had been forced to miss for so long. In 1914, Anton Kerssemakers, a friend of Vincent’s, put his memories of the studio down on paper. The sexton’s house was demolished in 1936.
