Breda: Vincent’s wealthy god-uncle, the art dealer Vincent van Gogh, lived at Huize Mertersem. ‘Uncle Cent’ had an extensive collection of paintings, which must certainly have made an impression on the young Vincent and Theo. He also facilitated Vincent and Theo’s appointments at the art dealers Goupil & Cie. It was from him that Vincent received his first set of watercolours as a gift when he decided to become an artist. Vincent and his uncle fell out. This was due to their differing views on good taste in art, but certainly also to Vincent’s unconventional behaviour.
