Helvoirt: Vincent would visit his parents, who lived in Helvoirt from 1871 to 1875, on religious holidays and birthdays. Vincent never actually lived in Helvoirt himself. He had left his parents’ home two years earlier and was working at the Goupil art gallery, first in The Hague, and later in London and Paris. At Christmas or during the holidays, he would visit the vicarage. He sketched the Reformed church where his father preached. He also made little drawings there for Betsy Tersteeg, the daughter of his boss in The Hague. At the age of twenty, Vincent was called up to take part in the military conscription draw in Oisterwijk. His father arranged for a substitute, which cost him a great deal of money.
