Tilburg: In 1866, the former city palace of William II became home to the Hogere Burger School. It was here that Vincent was taught by one of the finest art teachers of the time: Constant Cornelis Huijsmans. He taught according to traditional academic principles, with drawing from life taking centre stage. It is remarkable that Vincent made no mention whatsoever of his time at the HBS in his later letters. In fact, he wrote to his brother Theo that it would certainly have helped him if someone had taught him the rules of perspective earlier.
